LIB - Automated / Self Service Book Loan Kiosk
Tuesday, October 15, 2024

The University has reached another important milestone with the successful implementation of the Automated Self-Service Book Loan System. This system, developed by the Library Office in collaboration with the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office, represents a significant leap forward in the way library services are managed and accessed by students and staff.

A key component of the project was the development of an API (Application Programming Interface) by the ICT Office, which allowed seamless integration with the system vendor’s platform. The API provided the necessary access to the University's Enrolled Students and Active Employee databases, along with their associated RFID data, ensuring that only authorized individuals could borrow or return books. The internally developed RFID system played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth implementation of this technology. Remarkably, thanks to the efficiency of the ICT team and the pre-existing RFID infrastructure, the entire project was completed in just two weeks—a significant achievement for a project of this scale.

The implementation of the Automated Self-Service Book Loan System has streamlined the entire borrowing and returning process, making it more convenient and efficient for library users. With this system, users can now simply scan their RFID card and the book they wish to borrow or return, completing the transaction without the need for manual data entry by a librarian. This automated process reduces human error, speeds up transactions, and allows library staff to focus on more critical tasks, such as assisting with research and managing library resources.

The system is now fully operational, and it has significantly enhanced the user experience within the University community. It offers a more efficient and user-friendly service for students, faculty, and staff, providing them with a modernized way to access library resources. Furthermore, this innovation aligns with the University's commitment to leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency and service delivery, reinforcing its efforts to digitize and modernize campus processes.

This automated system not only improves the day-to-day library operations but also positions the University as a forward-thinking institution, ready to meet the evolving demands of its academic community. It enhances the overall campus experience, offering a seamless and contemporary service that contributes to a more streamlined and effective academic environment.
